I'm working on a MF 35 diesel. At start up it won't start without ether. Even after it has run and is warm, 10 minutes after you shut it off it will not restart with out ether. Acts like it looses fuel primer. Any suggestions?

I'm assuming it's a 4 cylinder 23C diesel engine. They were always a bad starter, and get worse with wear. The liners are very thin and not a tight fit, fit new liners and rings and you should be OK. There are certain modifications possible, including drilling a hole in the combustion chamber to cause direct injection on start up, and drilling to accept glow plugs in all cylinders.

My Dad has been using ether to start his for 40 years. He disconnected the glow plugs about ... oh ... 40 years ago, didn't like them, kept blowing the fuse or something. When I fix that tractor up I will try the glow plugs again, but in the mean time ether is the only way. Tractor runs good otherwise, lots of blue smoke. It is a '58 with Standard engine.

Maybe the valves need readjusting. Sometimes after they get out of wack the valves will stick and make it difficult to start. Happened to my machine and my mechanic told me that was why. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Yes we had one till we got out of the cash crops. The best way with these little tractors is go to your local automotive store they can cross reference the glow plugs you need,,good price too..hook them up in series,,only one way that they`ll glow right..Got to have a good battery that`s key..Now the trick is after it first fires crank the key quickly back past the off position to the pre-heat just until it starts to fire on all four,,, and it`ll start guarrenteed.. Even on a cold day the first crank will cool the little glow plugs off...

Have a good one and GetRDone,,,
