Sorry, I had to yell Dean, I need help.I'm posting this for a friend of mine who has recently rebuilt a MF135 (1962) 3-cylinder Perkins gas engine in his tractor. It is a model G152 engine. He is an experienced mechanic who has rebuilt hundreds of different engines over his lifetime but this is the first time he has ever worked on that particular engine, or heard that particular engine running since he is just getting into the tractor thing. His rebuild involved a complete head reconditioning as well as a new set of pistons and sleeves. I believe the crank and the bearings measured out fine, the tractor doesn't show a lot of hours on a working hourmeter and everything worked and was in looked-after condition other than there was one exhaust valve seat rattling round a bit and he started his teardown, did some more measuring and hence the valves, sleeves, and pistons with rings. After the rebuild, he started it up and it ran well but he was concerned with an engine noise that he didn't recognize. The noise is what he says is a "piston speed" noise at idle only when the engine is warm coming from the mid block area (at least that's where he pinpoints it, one of his staff says he thinks it's slightly higher up). He says it's definitely not a crankshaft/rod problem or a valve noise. The noise disappears when you jump the RPM up to between 1000-1200 RPM's. He describes the noise as being a "chattering" noise. At idle when warm, he gets 40 pounds of oil pressure on the gauge.

At first he suspected that the piston/sleeve set he received from the supplier were mismatched. He has torn down the engine again and measured the piston/sleeve/ring fits and he says everything is within specifications. Since he's never worked with Perkins gas engines before, he is wondering if such a noise might be "normal" and characteristic of that engine? I told him I would post the question here for him and if you want, I could put you into email touch with him next week if that's alright with you. Thanks Dean ....

Hi Alberta The only thing I can think of is that when replacing the exhaust valve seat the head of the valve cannot stick up above the surface of the head don't know on the gas engine but on a diesel if the head of the valve is to far above the surface of the head the piston will hit them causing a similar noise as the one you described. I have never run across that on a gas engine but have several times on the diesel engine. Big Dean

Did he replace S/E bushes? Maybe one's a little tight, causing piston rock. Ring chatter?
Sounds like an experienced guy, so clearly there's no major problem. I'd give the engine some work and see if it settles down. Maybe try some upper cyl lubricant in fuel to see if that fixes it.
