Has anyone on this board ever repainted a 135 to what it looked like out of the factory? Mine is the Gas Deluxe with the Z145 Engine, and, I'd like to give it a new paint job in the coming months to a year from now and I was looking for hints from anyone who has done one in the past. Not to be too demanding, how well does the paint you can get from AGCO/MF hold up? Should I consider getting the more expensive brands of paint? Should I sandblast it? How should I go about it?

Thanks, Christos

Dale, I did visit there already - lots of information that could be applied to my project, but most of the posts there are over dealing with repainting Deeres and IH as opposed to MF. CNKS was exceptionally helpful and I have a better picture as to how go about things, thanks to his advice, but like he said, he'd never been around an 135. I've used spray cans of dealer paint to touch up certain parts of the Metallic Flint Grey, and when I bought new front rims, I repainted them with the Silver Mist and MF red that I had bought from Massey. I guess the point I failed to ask about is how should I get rid of the old paint? I read the archives on the paint forum and its a mixed bag. I'm concerned about if I sandblast it I might hurt something expensive as I have no clue on how to sandblast and, the solvents concern me because that stuff is noxious.

So I guess with this said, anybody care to take a stab on what I ought to do now?

Christos

I am currently rebuilding a burnt straight axle MF135 and have another very rough bent axel MF135 that also needs a clean up. Before you start with the paint check that all bearings, seals and gaskets are OK and you are not covering up further problems. These tractors are over 30 years old and all gaskets and seals, if original are due for replacement and the time to do it is prior to repainting not after it. I am using Bareco paint except for the engine and gearbox. A local paint shop made up some of the original grey metal flake I remember these tractors were painted with it in Australia and the results are stunning only hope the tractor goes as well. If using enamal aid hardener then be careful to use adequate filters as the fumes are carconogenic. The paint will stay wet longer as well and pick up dust so you need a clean paint shop as well.

Dealer paint usually works pretty good. You could add some hardener to it to give it some added toughness. Don't use el cheapo paint from TSC or similar crap. It looks good while it's wet, but then its just dull forever after. The MF gray is the wrong color completely and I see more tractors assaulted with that then I care to admit.

Hi,
The quality of the finish you get is only as good as the preperation you put into it. If you want an A1 finish then I would suggest that you remove EVERY bit of old paint possible, certainly from the engine and gearbox. No matter how clean the old paint is, I have found that ite oil/diesel still in the paint will not take very long to stain the new paint. Have completed a full respray of a Fordson Dexta recently with every bit of old paint removed. The main tool that I used was a needle or descaling gun. A LOT of work but well worth the effort when you see the finished job.

I painted mine several years ago using dealer paint.....still looks great, but I keep it in a shed...don't know how it would hold up if the tractor stayed outside..... ...

I started my paint job by just touching up the hood..... if I were to do it over again, I'd spray everything at one time..... less gun cleaning etc....

Friend of mine painted his MF175 4 years ago using the MF/AGCO paint. He grumbles about the price of the paint. That tractor lives outside. The paint is still shiny and the red hasn't faded. He was recently offered $10,000 Canadian. It was a good looking machine when he bought it and he had it sand blasted and epoxy primed before the top coat.
