Hello Andrew - There are two clutch adjustments on the two stage clutches on the 35-135-165, and probably your 178, which can be completed without splitting the tractor - free play, and primary pressure plate clearance. (Hollar for Big Dean and ask him if your 178 is the same, to be sure.) Free play is set to 1/2" or so of pedal free play by loosening the bolt clamping the pedal (or actuating bracket on some units) to the clutch operating shaft going into the transmission. The shaft (or bracket) is rotated to the correct position with a rod or screwdriver while holding the pedal, and the bolt snugged up. If the free play is now correct, tighten the bolt - HARD. Otherwise, sooner or later the pedal slips on the shaft. With this free play setting the PTO should stop with the pedal about an inch above the footboard. If it's still turning with the pedal clear down, the second adjustment is through the inspection hole under the flywheel housing. Three cap screws with lock nuts, between the springs around the perimeter of the clutch. The clearance between the heads and the rear plate determine when the PTO clutch releases. As you press the pedal down, the clearance reduces, and when they contact (usually about half way down) you feel the extra pressure on the pedal. Factory says .080 to .090". We've found that usually is too much - PTO grinds when you try to shift it into gear and it keeps turning with the pedal all the way down. We set ours to .060 or so. You need a GOOD 1/2" wrench, because these are usually set quite firmly and if you strip them you can't do anything more unless you split the tractor. Hope this helps. Jack
