have a MF135 (perkins Diesel), Tried starting the other day and would not start, would turn over once but thats it. tried jumping it, same thing. thought it might be the old battery (five years) but thats not it because I put a new one in and does not start. I turn the key and I get a clunk. turn the key again and get nothing. any ideas where to start next. Have some mechanical skill but limited skill in detecting the problem.

Hi Blair,
You have a new battery so at least we can rule that out although it may not be the source of the problem. Check the connections between the battery cable and terminals and eyelets at each end.
Ensure that the battery earth cable is attached to the chassis preferably at one of the starter mounting bolts. If these connections are good, remove the small push-on terminal from the solenoid which is situated above the starter motor body.
Ensure that the tractor is in neutral and use a piece of heavy wire or screwdriver and place across the battery cable connection at the solenoid and the small terminal. You may get a spark but don't worry.
With a firm connection the engine should start if not it would appear to be a starter problem probably brushes.
Please come back if I can be of further help.
Regards
David

Blair, first thing I would do is to remove, clean n wire brush, then reattach each n every battery n starter n solenoid n ground cable. The starter could be mechanically stuck or jammed into the flywheel, which rocking the engine back over a bit or loosening the starter may free up.

If the lights dim way down badly when shes trying to crank I would suspect a faulty starter but if they hardly dim I would wonder about the starter switch or solenoid. Solenoid chatter is often a sign of a weak battery or a bad connection somewhere. CHECK THEM ALL
