I am told at the local stores that straight 20 weight oil is no longer available. Can anyone tell me what I can safely use in my tractor at temperatures between 0 and 40 degrees F?

Mike, please re-read my post to you. It is NOT Mobil One for cars. The oil I am recommending is Mobil Delvac One 5w40 for diesel engines. It is very widely used by long-haul truckers, particularly those that are fully responsible for all maintenance and repairs on their "owned" truck.

Hi again Mike, how cold does it get in your area? We're talking as low as -40 in extreme cases here.If it doesn't get much colder than low 30's or 20's in your area, maby you would be ok with 15w40 like it was suggested earlier.O yes, the stink pipe is a round drain type pipe located near the bottom of the engine that lets out blue smoke if it is burning oil, maby even drip abit.Any way,i'm sure yours is fine, the black smoke in the exhaust is just fuel, masseys do that when they are working hard and this is normal.best regards

Hi Philip, it gets down to 30 below here for extremes and 20 below can happen quite often. A synthetic was mentioned by Tom from Texas (I think) but I don't know if I can get that here either. The smoke from my exhaust has a slight blue color to it, I hope I am not in touble!

Mike, we need some info to better help you. Diesel or gas?
Block heater, tank heater, or no heater?
Stored inside or outside? Heated or unheated?
Tom

Tom, it is a Perkins diesel AD3.152 with a block heater stored outside where the winter temperatures can get as low as 30 below. I do occasionally need to run it when it is a little below zero but I try to wait until the temps are above zero. Winter temps can sometimes reach the 40 above mark also. Thanks and hope that helps.

Mike, thanks for the full info. If I was parking outside in those temps, even with the block heater, I would use Mobil Delvac One 5w40 Diesel full synthetic. This is not mobil one for cars; it is heavy duty diesel synthetic. Locally sold by Petro truck stops or the Mobil wholesaler. It will really let your engine spin cold and will give all the protection the diesel needs for hard work. Good luck.
Tom

Tom, are you sure that the Mobil One will not do any harm to that old Perkins? I checked out the mobil webpage and it says that it is made for new tighter engines. I will be glad to try it if it is OK and I can find it.
Thanks so much

Hi Mike,we have some pretty diverse weather in our area.In the spring/summ./fall,we run 15w40 diesel rated oil in our tractors when they are working hard to gain the protection the higher viscosity the 15w40 offers. In winter we run a diesel rated 10w oil which lets the engine turn over faster to start better in cold weather. It doesn't need the higher rating because in winter here all they do is either loader or snow removal work which is usually for short, lighter load conditions.Hope this is a help, phillip d.

Thanks guys. I was wondering if multi viscosity oils like 10w/30 or such can harm the diesel motor as those types of oils were not listed in the owner's manual. Philip, the parts stores around here could not get 10w. I have not tried the nearby John Deere dealer though. Plus snow removal here sometimes is quite a strain on the tractor, especially when we get over a foot in a single storm. My tractor smokes a little too when it is under a load. Should I be worried?

I assume you have 3 cly Perkins diesel. I have the same engine and i run 10w 30 year round. 10w 30 for diesels is harder to find but Shell Rotella make it. I have also found it at a New Holland and Agco dealerships. Do not use gasoline 10w 30 oil as it lacks diesel additives. 15w 40 is to heavy for really cold starting of a little 3 cly Perkins.

I was reading my data plate and it said to use 30W in the summer and 20W in the winter, but I have never seen 20W oil. I really have no idea, but I will try to research it more and get back with you. I plan to use 15W-40, I think.

Mike,10w30 should be fine as long as it is diesel rated. We use Irving IDO 10W,but I understand Irving oil is not available in the US,try Esso.As far as smoke goes,if it is coming out of the exhaust, and not the stink pipe, and burning little oil,and the smoke is coal black, that can be normal for a perkins.

Aaron, not sure what the stink pipe is but the slight smoking is coming from the exhaust and I will have to check the color. I will ask around to see if anyone does have diesel rated 10/30
