Hello Ben - Most owners have that problem. Seems that's why MF went to Perkins. They were a great running engine - smooth, lots of power, ours had probably 5000 hours on it when I overhauled first, and the crank was still standard size. We cured the hard starting first by making sure the manifold heater system worked. That helped, but the most improvement came with a block heater. 15 min in summer, an hour or two at zero F. Hard to fit unless you're overhauling, but there are heaters that will fit in the lower rad hose. Glow plugs were fitted on some - they should all be working. If two or more are gone, it's probably cheaper to install the manifold heater setup. Ether in moderation can help, but this is not needed with the block heater. And too much can cause serious internal damage. A caution - no ether with a functioning manifold heater - new manifolds are expensive!
