hi

i cant start my 3 cylinder diesel 135 this morning and i dont think the heat start (turning the key back 1 notch) is working. last year it would start whatever the weather if it wa heated for 30 seconds or so but this morning, no way, i heated it for quite a while and it just keeps spinning over and puffing smoke out of the exhaust.

is there a fuse somewhere that could have blown?

this tractor doesnt really have many electrics left the only gauge that works is oil pressure, but as i say the cold start was working last year.

Thanks ben

Hi Ben,
We can't have a 135 that won't start!!!!
Peltsi is correct with his message but additionally you should check to see if the heater is warming by holding your hand on the inlet manifold next to the thermostart. If it warms (you won't get burnt) then at least you have current going to the thermostart. There is a twenty-five amp fuse in the line so check that if you don't have current. It's on the brown/green cable.
If your key switch is an anticlockwise HS,S type then it is old and could well be faulty.
My money would be on the thermostart. Connect a 12V bult between the thermostart connection on the cable and earth.
As a final check remove the fuel supply pipe and you should loose about half an eggcup ful of fuel.
Regards
DavidP

hi

i assume the tractor has the thermostart manifold heater. If the heater is working ok, you should hear a faint "puff" sound after about 10-15 seconds of heating, as the fuel injected ignites. If you have confirmed that the heater doesn't work, there are 3 things that could be wrong:
1. you're not getting fuel to the plug, check that the line's not glogged.
2. You're not getting any juice to the heater plug, check with a multimeter that you have ~12 volts coming to the heaters' terminal when you turn the key back 1 notch. You could have blown a fuse or the ignition switch itself could be shot.
3. If it was none of the above, the heater itself would be shot. Usually the problem is in the heating wire, which at some point will fail. You can check this by measuring the resistance between the terminal on the heater and a ground point, if it shows infinite or nothing then you've found your problem, ~2 to 5 ohms would indicate a working heater.

Hope this helps

Peltsi
