I got a 4255 MF and in about 4-5 days the batteries are down too much to start tractor. i put a new set of batteries in thinking the other ones were no good, but it is still the same. The alternater is cold, I unhooked the + cables and hooked a test light on the + post to cable and it doesn't light untill the switch is turned on. Can anyone enlighten me on how to locate the battery drain. thanks Alvin

Hi,
YOur problem is most likely a faulty diode in the alternator. It allows current to pass to the battery but not to return and that might be what is happening. I would suggest removing the alternator and having it checked at your local auto electrician.

a very small drain on my boat electical system did same thing, probably wouldn't have lit a test light

I used old faithful multimeter set to DC milli-amps, unhooked hot battery cable and put meter in-between battery post and cable, reverse leads if needle goes wrong way, this step will prove you have a drain

then I un-hooked fuses one at a time until drain stopped, was a circulating pump that I hardly ever use, you might have to unhook leads on a tractor

might be bad diode in alternator, or maybe a wire just barely rubbed thru to ground

Hook everything (electrical) up like you normally have it. Take the negative battery cable off and leave it off. Next, take a 12v test light hook one end to the battery post and the other end to the end of the battery cable. With the key switch in the OFF position the light should not be on at ALL. You should have some sort of draw from your symptom (light may be on dim to bright depending on the load). Start by unhooking electrical components one by one checking each time to see if the light goes out. If you suspect the alternator/generator
start with that in your troubleshooting.
