I have a MF 135 Split apart to fix oil leak. I am having a very hard time getting tractor back together. I have the transmission about 1/2 inch from the motor, but it just don't seem like the splines on the shaft and the clutch are lining up. I have put pressure on both front and rearend of tractor at the same time and can turn the motor with no resistance. Just dont seem to be lining up. Any help or pointers from any one would be great!!!!! Thanks Al

Hi,
Jerry has mentioned most of the things to look out for. Under NO circumstances try and 'pull' the engine in. A couple of things that will help are if you can fit some longer 7/16 UNC studs or bolts and fit some springs under the heads so that there is a little pressure for entry. The other is that if you have a mechanical PTO, engage it. Bring the engine in as close as it will go. Insert a screw driver or similar in the hole in the PTO shaft and turn slowly. If the splines are butting you will feel this as you turn. If you have it right you will actually feel the splines engage and that is the first step. Ensure that the release bearing is not too far forward to prevent fitting and that the main plate is aligned centrally with the spiggot bearing in the flywheel.
Lastly, remain patient. If you are using a trolley jack rather than the MF rail trolley you have to be just about perfect in your alignment.
Cheers
DavidP

I just finished doing that with my 135 Perkins gas - two times! When it's that close, you should be able to push the clutch pedal down and release the discs enough so they will line up perfectly. The alignment tool most of us use doesn't line it up close enough for a slide-in fit. Also, be sure the space between the two halves is the same all the way around. You can put two of the long bolts in to help it together, but don't get too wild with the pressure or you'll ruin a disc. Good Luck!
