Hi.

Has anyone undertaken a restoration project on a Massey Harris 55 standard in the past while? I haven't got alot of experience doing this sort of thing but am willing to try it. by the way, I do have a number of people who are experienced and competent with automotive stuff and trucks.

I'm also having trouble locating a engine rebuild kit too. Haven't bought the tractor yet and don't know if its gas or diesel (I know this is important when purchasing this).

Any help will be appreciated.

I think you are on the right track picking Massey Harris as a first restoration project. One of the main reasons is that the engine/clutch assembly can be removed from the cast iron tub of the tractor without splitting the tractor in half. Also, there's lots of them around, and many of the earlier ones from the 40's and into the 50's used outside supplier engines (Continental, Chrysler, etc.) and you can find them and their parts easily. As far as your choice of a 55, they were a pretty good tractor, but from my point of view, they are also pretty BIG, which is something to consider when starting out and restoring. The 44 is even big for some collectors, most preferring the 33,30, 22,20, 101's (seniors and juniors), and if you're lucky, Ponys, Pacers, Mustangs, etc. Also, think about the rear rubber. If it is bad, finding good used stuff for a 55 would be a chore, and buying new tires would put you in the poor house. Personally, I would stay away from diesels, if only for the fact that gas versions are easier to work on and troubleshoot fuel problems, but then I am not a top notch mechanic either. Just some ideas, hope they help you out. Don't forget there are other brands as well to consider, just not Masseys. Don't buy a pig in a poke when there's a ton of choices out there.
