I am contemplating on purchasing a 1991 massey 3660 mfwd with 3770 hrs. He wants 26,500 for it.
I went and looked at it yesterday and it looks pretty good. New front tires, duals on rear are at 60% new hydraulic pump 3 hyd. remotes everything works. Is this a fair price? Also are these tractors good for loader work? It has the dyna shift. Are the hydraulics good on these machines? Any general problems with these tractors overall?

Find out whether it had the brakes done at the same time as the hydraulic pump. Both hand brake and service brakes (seperate units) wear and then start to machine away at the metal. This gets into the hydraulic pump, causing premature wear. If you don't cure the original fault it will reappear, also filling the steering unit, lift valve etc with swarf necessitating a full system strip down and flush. I have just sorted such a tractor out for a customer and it has cost him a lot of money to put right. This is a common fault on Beauvais transmissions, similar things happen to Deeres etc.

So I should find out if the brakes have had new wear parts installed? Or what should I specify?
Also if the brakes were redone wouldn't the old swarf still be in the system?

Depends whether it was caught "in time", and whether the system was thouroughly flushed. Best thing is to take the pressure filter off (if fitted, can"t remember what year this was added) and see if there"s any swarf. If not look at the oil on the dipstick, looking out for any greyness. If the brakes haven"t been changed, and the oil is clean, buy the tractor but have them changed at the earliest opportunity as a service item. If the oil is grey (particles in suspension) walk away, you will end up throwing a lot of money at it. Incedentally that seems an awfull lot of money for that tractor by UK standards. Is that normal sort of money out there?
