My friend has a 1968 MF 135 gas with a 3-cylinder Perkins. Should the 3-point hitch have hydraulic power BOTH lifting and lowering or just lifting? This one only lifts with hydraulic power and only seems to lower using gravity. Does this sound right?

While were on 135 Hydraulics, mine are real slow and pretty jerky when raising and after a lot of use get even slower but smoother. Am I looking at bad news? I'm fairly new to tractors, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been running a 6' shredder, does great except for the slow hydraulics. Perkins Gas.

First thing I'd do is check the level of transmission/hydraulic fluid. If it is low it could slow things down.

Level is good. Would a dirty filter cause that type of problem or would that cause a complete failure to work?

You may be on the right track. The strainer is something to check. Last winter on the colder days my 3 point would not raise and lower until the oil had warmed up some. In the spring I removed and cleaned the hydraulic oil strainer. So far it has worked flawlessly. This spring when I change the TDH oil it will get a new strainer.

Was it a big job to clean it or not too bad. I've done quite a bit of mechanic work, just not on tractors. Mostly cars and oil field pumps and engines. I did buy a service manual for the 135 from this site.

Hi,
Absolutely right....hydraulic pressure to lift the linkage only.
