Can anyone recommend a good machine shop that has experience working with cast iron and can weld my MH 55 manifold. There are several cracks that need to be gouged and welded. I live in northern Wisconsin and I don't know anyone who can do it.
Thanks,
Ben

Just remembered I still have the phone book. It's
Voelker Machine Shop 417 N 1st street, Abbotsford 715 223-3383. You start out by saying,"You
probrobly can't fix this, but would you take a look
at it."

There was a guy here in Texas that was good. Got the chance to watch him. He always reversed the leads on the welder when welding cast. He would then place a hand (no glove) about a foot from where he was welding. When his hand got hot he stopped and let everything cool down. Never saw any of his cast welding crack. This was on printing presses but the principal should work on any cast. You might let a local welder try this.... Lots luck

You are looking for a real craftsman. There was a guy who used to post here at YT by the name of George from Maryland.Sorry ,I no longer find his e mail address, but maybe if you ask for him at tractor talk, maybe he is still around. He does some fantastic work.Reasonable too.

I've done limited weldiong on cast, one was the manifold on our 1855 Oliver. Whe it was in the shop the manifold was rusted in the muffler and broke off inside the manifold. I made up a sleeve out of scrap at work and welded it on. SO far so good, but it's only been a few months. I also welded a cast hitch on our JD disk back in high school. I grooved it way out and filled it in 1 layer at a time and chipped off the slag in between. It's been holding for about 5 -6 years now no problems. Got any pictures of where it's broke/cracked? I work in a machine shop, and while I'm no cast expert I have some experience. I am located in Kaukauna. There is some other guy somewhere on this website who is a real guru at cast, just don't know his handle or what board to find him on. Maybe tool talk.

Is it my imagination or does there seem to be less and less of those kinds of guys around these days? When I was a kid in the 50's, there seemed to be lots of those guys around, now I am hard pressed to think of one. Maybe I'm not looking very hard or maybe I'm not looking at all.

You are looking for a Blacksmith/welder's son, he
will heat the damaged manifold , repair, cool for
a slow 24 hours, or more. Until you find the guy,
you are wasting words on rod-hot welders. Most
manifolds can be repaired, if cracked, rotted is the need for replacement. Good luck.

Harris Guy,
Agreed. I know that welding cast is an art and that there is pre and post heating involved depending upon the thickness. Thats why I hope someone here has had one done and can recommend someone good. After welding the ears the flanges will have to be milled.
Thanks,
Ben
