MF175 Any good?

Are the 1975 MF 175's any good in your opinion? I'm looking at a diesel, but I hear they are dangerous because they free-wheel when on the low side of the multi-power, and that they usually cost at least $600 a year to fix the multi power. What do you suppose one would be worth, that the hours cannot be verified but seems to be in good enough shape, diesel.

Any thoughts or advice much appreciated!

That`s a big baler for this tractor, it will turn it, but watch out if you have hills in your field, the 175 is not a heavy tractor.

There is no good reason that a Multi-Power should have to be repaired every year. There were some design upgrades through the years that improved the reliability. A 1975 model should have them from the factory.

That is a late model 175 your looking at. Really they are an excellent tractor. Multipower does free wheel in low, but a competent operator will learn to use that to their advantage. Multipower is an extremely reliable and low maintainence powershift. Much more durable then IH's TA. The only thing that can cause them to fail is if the tractor runs low on oil or if they got repaired by someone that didn't know what they were doing, or if you let the tractor roll in opposite direction of travel with multipower in low and the clutch depressed. I have two massey's now with multipower and shift them contantly under all kinds conditions, and have had no problems. A good price for a 175 diesel depends on your area but $3500-$6500 depending on condition.

We have a '67 (I think) 175 diesel. Has 6200 hrs. It has done a lot of hard work. Still on original motor and drivetrain. It has never been cracked. It has been a very good tractor.

That said, I'm going to give it (at minimum) a head job (oil leaking down valves) and a new clutch this winter.

Thanks jogl! Hey, do you think the MF 175 would have any problem running a NH 851 round baler?

Hi, at least the UK built MF 175 with the 236 engine had 67 horsepower. Maybe someone know how much powr you need for that particular baler.

The 236 engine is a very reliable workhorse, high torque... long stroke engine.

I have never run a baler, hard for me to say. And I haven't run too many other brands so it is hard for me to compare.

You might have to start a new thread to get some other guys to offer opinions on that question.

Years ago when we first started buying M F tractors a local mechanic told us to stay away from the ones with multi power, Had very good luck to date following his advice. The operater has a lot to do however , with the life of most machines.

We have had pretty good luck with multi power. On both our 175 and 285 the multi power clutch has out lasted the main clutch.

But although we work them fairly hard we are not rough with them. For instance, if I'm pulling something heavy down the road I will ease off of the fuel before bumping the multi power into high. If I don't need to I'm not going to engage the multi power clutch at maximum torque.

Wow your nice to your multipower. I can't tell you how many times I've shifted from low to high after I let the rpm's build a little to muscle through a tough spot. When I go down the road with a load, I shift right through gears and never let off when going from low to high. Both my 1100 and my 1130 shift better then my father inlaws 1970 Ford one ton.

They get shifted full out plenty, but only when necessary, like pulling a plow or planter, etc.
