Starter problems on TO 35

I am restoring this old Massey Ferguson TO 35 gas(1955). I have replaced every electrical component on the tractor with parts from yesterdays tractors. I had the starter and generator rebuilt locally. When I put everything together and hit the key, the starter is turning the engine very slowly for about 1 or 2 complete revolutions and then she acts like the battery is dead. Took the plugs out and the generator belt off, but it did not make any difference. The motor still turned very slowly for about 1 or 2 complete turns and stopped. New battery has 6.3 volts in her. I took the starter back and they said it had a problem that they supposedly fixed. Put the starter back on and I got the same thing. The only thing I can figure is that the starter is still bad. Originally smoked the 10 guage wire I ran from the solenoid to the starter so I replaced with a regular battery cable wire. Can anybody think of anything else it can be before I order a remanufactured starter from yesterday's tractors. Any help would be appreciated.

I had my TO-35 starter 'rebuilt' twice. It still didn't work. I'm no mechanic so I took the tractor to a local mechanic. When I picked it up (fixed) I asked what the problem was. His reply was that the starter motor brushes needed replacing. Maybe your rebuilder is no better than the one I used.

I would definitely check the connections at the ground from the battery. If you have an ohm meter check from the (-)neg post on the battery to the frame bracket near the starter and see if you have good continuity. I have had weird problems when things had a bad ground. What gauge are your battery cables? 4ga might work but 2ga would probably be better with the 6v system. Maybe others will chime in here with more info...(read wisdom..) Andy
