Through the forums last winter, I asked how many pounds of torque to use when putting on a 7/8" fine thread crankshaft nut on a Continental 4-cylinder flathead engine. It only holds on the pulley (keyed) which drives the water pump and the generator. I received answers ranging from 100 foot pounds to 200 foot pounds (including locktite sometimes). The guys locally at the Continental Engine shop could never give me a value until today when the fellow on the front desk told me their manual said from 100-120, but then said he wouldn't go over 80 if it's an old engine and the nut has been on and off over 50 years or so (I don't think it's been off very often, maybe even only the one time). So my question is obvious, what do I torque the nut to? I'll go with whoever sounds like they know best.

What does your manual say? I would follow that.
