I am restoring a 1963 model MF 35 with a Continental Z134 gas engine and am unable to get any sort of wrench or socket on the top manifold nuts for removal. Obviously they were put on so there must be a tool/technique I am unaware of. Anybody out there got any ideas?

Thanks

Bill

Now you figured out why OEM's have that list of "special tools". Grin.

I think if you spend an hour or 2 on the www you can get your answer for small pattern nuts. Lots of hardware mfgr's out there, and lots of applications for nuts and bolts. So you just need to look for your small pattern nuts.

And don't worry about SS. You are redoing a 30-40 year tractor. Doubt you will redo it again in 30-40 years, Grin. But if you have a problem with that, put some antisieze on the threads, like Auto Zone sells for spark plugs.

Hi BDA;
I used a bench grinder on a socket until it cleared the space. Use ample penetrating oil as well. Go slow. Good luck.

Thanks for your input gentlemen. After several applications of liquid wrench, modification of the two ends of a 9/16" box/open end wrench, and use of a pair of small vice grips I was able to remove all of the nuts without damage to the studs or manifold. Hopefully, I can find replacement SS nuts with slightly smaller outside dimensions along, perhaps, with a little grinding on the manifold so they can be reinstalled in a conventional manner. Boy I wish I knew what the previous mechanic used to install those rascals. Dang thang must have been engineered by Ford eh?

I just restored my old TO 35. The manifold was a real bear to get off. I soaked the bolts with PB blaster over a period of a few days and finally got all but one off. I ground the head of the bolt off with a grinder and a dremel until the manifold came off. Then I locked vice-grips onto the shaft of the bolt and it came right out. I replaced the manifold and all of the bolts anyway so I did not lose anything. Hope this helps.
