I am trying to get to the bottom of what model exactly my tractor is, not that it matters too much as I love it anyway, but I'd like to know!

I'm in the UK and recently bought an MF35X (my first tractor)which I'm told has an A3-152 perkins diesel engine. However, on all the sites I've looked at it says that 35Xs were built from serial no. 302413, and mine is earlier than that.

So, does this definitely mean I don't have a 35X? It has diff lock and dual clutch.

Were any 35s built with the A3 engine, or was this only put into the 35X? How can you tell what engine is in your tractor?

Also what horsepower is the A3 engine?

Thanks

Thanks guys you are a mine of information :-)

So I think my tractor must be an MF35 deluxe as I found out somewhere one of the letters in the serial number means deluxe (can't remember which!). It starts SNMY.

I'm still confused about the engine then as my dealer says it is an A3-152.

I will have a look today and post back with my findings!

 MF 35 spec's in reply to Greydales, 02-24-2006 09:29:32
Hi Greydales.
Well I"m back! after seeing your question I scratched my way to the back of the cupboard where I keep my old copies of Power Farming Technical Annuals, after a audacious journey I came across the 1962-63 annual, then I turned around and had to come out! The annual has these specifications listed.
Manufactured by Massey-Ferguson Tractors Ltd.,Coventry, England.
Massey Ferguson MF 35 Diesel
Official Test No.: NIAE/260/BS--March, 1960.
Max. HP AT ENGINE CRANKSHAFT: 38.4 at 2,000 engine rpm.
MAX. HP AT PTO SHAFT: 37.1 (720 rpm) at 2000 engine rpm.
MAX. HP AT BELT: 35.8 (3,100 fpm) at 1,968 engine rpm.
MAX. HP AT DRAWBAR: 34.5 at 2,070 engine rpm. MAX. CRANKSHAFT TORQUE: 113.8 lb/ft at 1,250 engine rpm.
MAX. DRAWBAR PULL: 6,150 lb at 1.17 mph, on 11 x 28 tyres.
ENGINE: Vertical inline; 4-stroke; indirect injection diesel; water cooled; overhead valves; cylinders-3; bore-3.600 in.; stroke-5.000 in.; displacement-152 cu. in.; compression ratio-17.1:1; rated speed-2,000 rpm.

enough! No. that was all for the earlier motor so I looked for the next in My collection and found a Annual for 1965 - 66 and a search in that has this result:
Massey-Ferguson 35x Dies. De-Luxe:
Test no.; NIAE 367/BS. Oct.63.
MAX. PTO HP: 40.80
MAX. d"bar HP.: 37.00
MAX. c"shaft torque: 117 lb-ft @ 1,290 engine rpm
MAX. pull: (lb) 6,100
MPH on max pull: 1.3
No of cyl.: 3 Bore 3.600 in. x Stroke 5.000 in. rated rpm. 2,250
PTO. RPM.:712 @ 2,250 engine rpm.

Now with a sore finger from typing as well as sore knee"s from crawling into the cupboard.

Cheers Arthur from Tassy

FE 35, MF35 & MF35X- all models Model Year FE 35 Tractor with either Standard petrol, V.0. or 23c diesel engine.
Gold engine and transmission, grey tinwork. (Built up to Serial no.74655) 1956-1957 MF35 Tractor, Massey Ferguson/Standard built with either Standard petrol or V.0. engine.
Grey engine and transmission and red tinwork 1957-1964 MF35 Tractor, Massey Ferguson/Standard built with Standard 23c diesel engine.

Ricedaddy, How do you explain my 35? The serial number plate says FE-35, manufactured in Coventry, England, and it is a Perkins A3.152 diesel, and the serial number is 360173. I have differential lock, tractormeter, deluxe padded two piece seat, and dual clutch. Several Massey sites say it is a 1964 model. Also, it is positive ground and I don't know for sure, but I don't think any North America units were positive ground. If I can figure out how to upload a picture, I will post a picture of the s/n plate, and dash. C. T.

Hp is as the tractor says; 35 PTO (1600 rpm) and the tugginest 35 you will ever sit behind. PTO hp is at 1600, but Perkie set the torque curve to max just below 1600 so that when you get into trouble you don't have to down shift like red and green do, she does it for you by increasing engine torque.

I was looking behind me one day while running close to a fence. Was supposed to turn, but didn't for the reason mentioned. She (MF 35 ) caught the (12" diameter) post between the sheet metal and front tire and jammed against the post in a split second....before I could think. The engine didn't die; it just started digging a hole with the right rear tire....Once I got my composure, I pushed in the clutch and got out of the ordeal. Was duly impressed.

Mark

Hello,
First of all there is usually a decal on the oil filter bowl giving the engine type.
Early 35's had the A3.144 engine and later ones had the A3.152. The 144 had a bore of 88.92mm and the 152 a bore of 91.49mm.
As far as I am aware diff pedals were an option on the later 35's and standard on the 35X. I think you may have a 35 with diff pedal option
Regards
David

Thanks, I"ll have a look at the little beast tomorrow. How does that translate into horsepower (I"m a female and ignorant of these things :-) )

The tractor is a late 1962.
