Hello, I am rebuilding a 135 Massey for a friend. Massey's are not my brand and I was wondering how to get the sleeves out of the block. The first cylinder sleeve exploded and was laying in the oil pan. I had never seen that before, anyone else? Also is there anything I need to check/know before putting it back together. Thanks Brad

Hi Brad,
There are two possibilities, the sleeves will come out easily or they will be very difficult. It is possible to use a small sharp screw-driver as a chisel but you have to be very careful that you do not damage the parent bore. If you have the block out you will need a disc machined just a couple of thou smaller than the parent bore size and either a heavy fine pitch screw with fittings to accomodate the sleeve as it comes out or the use of a hydraulic press. This disc is also needed when fitting the liners (UK name)
If you have an MF agent or engine rebuilder nearby then it might be better to contact them.
When the liners are removed and the recesses of the block thoroughly cleaned fit a liner in place upside down and with a straightedge measure the gap under the rim of the liner. The 'stand down' should be 2 to 4 thou. This 'gap' is made up by the ring on the head gasket. Any more than that and you will need to add a shim.
Cheers
DavidP
