I have a MF35 that got stuck in gear last night and I can not seem to get it out. I own 2 of these tractors and have never had this happen before. Can anyone tell me if this is common or an easy fix??? If there is one? I would aaprectiate the help.

... and if it won't stay engaged, you likely have a broken shift fork. THEN things get interesting. Access to the transmission from the top is an adventure - I recently replaced the 1st-rev fork in my 35. Fishing the pieces out and changing the fork were the EASY parts. Getting there and back was the adventure.

Good luck; hope it's just stuck.

Thank you for all your help guys. I own two of them that were my fathers. He worked for an MF implement for years. Unfortuantly I never learned much about fixing them over the years (regretfully now). I apreciate the help you have given me! One last thing, what type of fluid do you put in the transmisssion? Bruce

To get the main shift lever unstuck pull your filler plug for the transmission look inside you will see a big gear. Find a level spot shut off the tractor. Push the clutch down & put the high low shifter in neutral to relieve any pressure that might be on the gears. With a long screwdriver or a small pry bar pry the big gear forward if it is hung in reverse pry it back if it is hung in first gear. If you happen to go to far it will go in the other gear. If hung in second or third gear you have to pry on the shift fork you can see through the filler hole. If hung in second pry the fork toward the front of the tractor. If hung in third pry the fork toward the back of the tractor. You need to get it in the center. You should be able to feel the detent balls pop in the grooves in the shift rail as you move the gear. Through the years I have probably unstuck at least a 1000 of them this way. It is a common problem on the Massey tractors after they get a little wear on them. Below is an article that tells what usually causes the shift lever to hang.

The transmission main shift lever hanging up is very common on most models of the MF tractors. The shift lever is held down by a spring & when you start to shift it you will unconsciously lift upon the lever. This causes the shift lever to go into the other shift fork on the other shift rail. That rail cannot be moved because of the lock on the back of the transmission to prevent it from going into two gears at the same time. Once you have both shift rails in the neutral position you can then move the shift lever. If you will use the palm of your hand When changing gears to push the lever into neutral then get hold of the lever to put it in the gear you want it in. Shifting it that way it usually will not hang on you again.

Hi Bruce I may have a couple of tips for you on getting it unstuck. I have an F40 and ive got it stuck a few times. If you remove the oil filler plug by the shifting lever and use a long screw driver you can move the gears back in place, it slides real easy.On one occasion i had to lift the cover up to access the top of the gear box. Good luck. Lester

Do a search on "stuck in gear" at the top of this page. This problem has been discussed many times. I have a 35 but have never experienced it, yet. It does not sound hard to fix. Lots luck.
