1955 MF TO 35 gas ... The tractor did not run when I got it b/c of fuel problems. Tore the entire tractor down painted and put back in together. Have the orginal owners manual and rewired the 6V positive ground electrical system as per specs. I replaced the coil and regulator and wired up the tractor. It will crank over, but I cannot get spark out of the coil?? I tried the old coil and the new one ... no spark?

First question, I have power coming into the coil from the ignition switch, should that be on the positive or negative side of the coil? I show 6 v coming into the coil and 6v going out of the coil into the distributor ... is this correct?

I have never worked with 6v systems so I am at a total loss!!! - Thanks for your help!

In priciple, a 6 volt system is no different from the 12 volt system.

If you have a positive ground system, the battery side of the wire from the key switch should be hooked up to the negative terminal of the coil. Hooking up the coil incorrectly will cause a loss of spark voltage. When you check the voltage drop on the coil the points must be closed. Otherwise, you have an open circuit with no current flow and both sides of the coil will be 6 volts. Open the distributor and make sure that the points are closed. Does your coil get supplied with current directly from the key switch? If it does, key switches are know to go bad. Check the voltage from the battery to the coil with the key switch on (and the points closed) and you should have 6 volts at every connect up to the battery side coil. The distributor side of the coil should have a low voltage but not zero volts. Write down the voltage at each connection. Feel the components. If one is hot that's a high resitance so you'll need to remedy it.

Do these tests then get back here with the results. Your coil will get a little warm during these tests and that's normal.
