I have a MF 65 with a loader. One dealer tells me to use Trans Hydraulic oil the other tells me to use MF SAE 90 as stated in the manual because the Trans Hydraulic will ruin the seals in the older tractor. Who is right? What is the best choice??

Sounds like me & Big Dean get our info from the same source. Right from the top!
Also something to think about here: You stated the tractor is "With a loader". The 90w oil MIGHT, might make the valve/loader a little slow if you are using a remote valve. I would like to know if you used the 90wt how the loader responds, just so I'll know what to tell other customers to expect in this situation. Thanks!

The main oil you do not want to use are the GL-3's and GL-5's. These have sulfur in them to help with high pressures in gear situations. The Sulfur is what may damage the yellow metals found in the tractor transmission.

A good clear explination of the perm III vs. 90 wt. GL-1 is given by Big Dean see is web page.

GL-1 90 oil is available from NAPA and a 5 gallon bucket is listed under PN 65-205. (they usually take a day to get it from a warehouse.)

Rick,- If you did not do what the manual said to do, would it not void the warranty on your tractor if the tractor still had one? Use the oil the manual says and you and your tractor will be happier. We are not talking any extra money here. thansk

I am a parts manager at a Massey dealership in TN. Permatran III is closer to a 5w20 than a 10w30. HOWEVER, I, nor any mechanic in any of our 3 dealerships have ever heard of Perm3 (Now called Permatran 821XL) runing oil seals in the tractor. It just will not happen! NOW, having that been said,,,, what DOES hapen is the old original seals get stiff and worn. And as 5w20 is allot thinner than 90w, it WILL seep out quicker. IF, IF the oil seals are in good shape, it will not leak, and permitran will not hurt anything. But Massey is aware that perm.3 will leak out on an older tractor. That is why the orriginal 90w is still avalable. ----- --KJ

The "65" has the older style ferguson system and should run the 90 weight straight mineral oil or what is called GL1. The M-F part number is M1103. If you had a "165" or "135" you would run the perma tran oil which is a 10-30 weight non-foaming hydralic- transmisson oil. Hope this helps. Thansk

How badly is that 90wt gonna cavitate with a pump not made for 90wt? Or does the loader on this tractor run off the belly pump.. which is made for 90wt oil.. etc.
