Massey Harris Pacer

I have 2 Massey Harris Pacer tractors (running). On one Pacer when the the starter is engaged it makes a grinding/howling sound about half or 3/4 of the time. Turning the key off and retrying starts the tractor up but I worry about causing permanent damage and want to fix it. The tractor is currently dissassmbled for restoration.

Is my trouble with the starter (maybe ring gear and pilot bearing or spring)? Or, is it likely that the cause is the big gear that is bolted to the engine is worn out?

Are the Pacer and Pony starters interchangable?

First off, the ring gear is the ring around the flywheel, and the pilot bearing/bushing is in the center of the flywheel, and supports the transmission input shaft. Not trying to be a smarta$$, just want to clarify for you. As to your problem, it is probably just the bendix (starter drive) that is bad. If you pull the starter, you will see that the teeth on the starter gear are probably half worn off. When looking for replacement, it will be listed under "starter drive" or "bendix". Sincerely just trying to help.... Stan

I believe the starters are the same. I would guess the loud noise is from the starter not engaging completely due to a worn ring gear or something in the starter itself. I am restoring a pacer also. Any good parts sources that you have found?
