Power Steering Control valve MF148 (135!)

General question relating to the power steering control valve on my MF148.
I have replace the ‘O’ rings (twice !!) but am still getting quite a leakage from
the top of the valve. Fluid gathers in a pool at the base of the steering column and I need to refill the reservoir regularly.
The internals of the valve to the naked eye looks fine, no obvious wear or scoring.
The tractor is from 1972 and 8500 hours. What is the expected lifespan of one of these valves, i.e. do they just wear out and need replacing after a period of time? Any observations or insights appreciated

Cheers

Hi there,
8500 hours is a good lifespan for any piece of equipment. Once the valve shows signs of leaking it is rarely worth trying to replace the seals as it is only a short term fix. Much of the life span depends on the type of work the tractor is doing. Loader work would wear a valve out much quicker than field woork for example due to the loading and frequency of turns.
A new one is the only answer. I don't think they are available as non genuine items.

Got a price today from a local Massey dealer for a new valve. 402 euro plus Vat - Ouch!!. I could buy a lot of power steering fluid for that !!. Unless I can pick up a salvage valve, I will leave well enough alone

Hi,
Sadly I think that the chances of finding a useable unit off a salvaged tractor are virtually nil. 135's and 148' are almost never scrapped. Yes, you can buy a lot of oil for that but where does it go when it leaks?
Good luck.
