Hope someone here can help. I purchased a 135 and rewired the tractor. It's been running fine but was back firing from time to time. A buddy of mine said it sounded like the firing order wasn't right. We messed with the firing order which got worse before we found the right order. The problem is it all of sudden now will not start. When I turn the key over the voltage regulator clicks but the solenoid doesn't engage the starter. I've checked it with a screw driver with the switch on and it sparks. It's like everything is getting juice but it won't turn over. Yesterday I kept messing with it and all a sudden it started...I ran it for about 2 minutes and shut it off. I immediately tried starting it again and...nothing. All I get is the clicking of the voltage regulator when I turn the key over. Does anyone have any idea on what else I can try...I'm out of ideas...thanks

Adam,
Be sure and check the two wires that go to your oil pressure switch. They can come loose and cause a no start situation, been there done that.

Could be your starter. Bad brushes, dirty commutator or relay contacts.

You may have a bad key switch. They do crap out. Turn the key on and using a volt meter, make sure that you have battery voltage on each side of the switch. I don't understand why your voltage regulator should be clicking. Are you sure it's not the solenoid?

I don't either. I just know that when I turn the key over at the ignition switch I get a clicking noise at the voltage box...Big Dean sent me some great wiring diagrams so I'm going to go back through again to make sure I have the wiring right.

I have been having a simular problem with the wiring harness too. As unsafe as this is, try jiggling the wires by the ignition by GENTLY pulling up a little bit. If it starts when the wires are like that there is a short somewhere. Also try the battery and make sure its charged. It worked for me last night!

You didn't say what variation of the 135 you had but I am assmuming that since you're talking about firing orders its a gas. If I remember correctly for the Perkins Gas its 1-2-3 and for the Continental Motors Engines (Z134 for the Special and the Z145 for the Deluxe) its 1-3-2-4 and its imprinted on the block as well. I would also try replacing the spark plugs and see if it helps.

Start at the most obviously stupid thing and troubleshoot from there. You'll find it - I know it worked for me.
