please help guys! i'm no mechanic and don't know what to do here. a little history....bought this thing last fall....pretty much all original...doesn't look like much has been done to it in some time. satrted up and ran reasonably well all winter...no problems. was using it 2 weeks ago. parked it for a week ...went out to use it ...it won't start.....nothing ...dead.

i thought the kids may have been playing on it ....left the key or lights on....so i jumped and it it started. when i disconected the jumper cables it shut down. thought hmmmm... might be generator. took generator and voltage regulator...in they were shot. i had them rebuilt...tried again.....jumped it.....starts up when jumped....but when disconnected it shuts down. tried changin battery...still nothing. i mean nothing....no crankin, no click...nothing. tried cleaning contacts on ground, and solenoid....still nothing.

can't figure why it will start off jump, but not run....please anyone with some thoughts?

thanks

chris

Chris, you said you had the generator rebuilt but that seems to me to be the problem. The tractor is not supplying power once you disconnect the jumper cables. Good luck with it.

If it has a hot battery and it will start and run when you jump it but dies when you disconnect the jumper cables it sure sounds like one or both of the cable are not contacting where they clamp onto the battery post. If you are connect the jump cables on to the battery cables at the battery.

Even if the battery connections look clean and tight, they can still not be conducting. I have run into this often enough on boats that I leave the cables a bit loose and twist them frequently to ensure a fresh connection. Experiment with a multi-meter before you do any more dramatic repairs.

Last week my golf cart died inexplicably. It turned out to be a broken connection held in place by a very stiff cable. All it took was a pocket knife and a wrench to fix the problem.

I'm not familiar with the starting/ignition system specifics on the MF 50. I'm presuming that it has a separate solenoid that connects the starter to the battery at start up and uses a push button to energize the solenoid to turn the engine over. The fact that when you disconnect the jumper, the ignition cuts off, implies that the problem is in the ignition part of the starting/running circuit. Concentrate on that part of the circuit and make sure every component and connection in the circuit is perfoming the way it's supposed to. The ignition should be on the same part of the circuit that the key is on. If that circuit runs through the solenoid, maybe the solenoid or the key switch is bad.
Sorry I can't be more specific but with the info you've provided, that's the best I can do.

Chris, are you jumping it at the starter or the battery terminals? Is your battery going dead?
Need more info about how you are getting it to start. From what you have said it does sound like a weak or bad battery or possibly more bad connections. Have you tried turning it over via jumering it across solenoid terminals with the big screwdriver?
Gary
