Broken dipstick!

Tonight when checking the oil on my MF 35 diesel the dip stick broke off about an 1" to 1.5" below the opening. Any suggestions on getting this out? There doesn't appear to be a lot of room around the sides of the dipstick so I'm afraid if I put even small tweezers down there I'll push it farther. I am going to try a small diameter .20mm stainless steel wire with a bend (hook) on it but I can't get it until tomorrow. How about a strong magnet touching a thin nail? I'm afraid this might require dropping the oil pan.

Got It!! The dipstick broke just below the cap but fell about 2" into the hole. The two separated pieces of the dipstick that provide seating pressure were still attached to the broken piece in the engine. There was absolutely no pair of pliers that were going to fit without pushing it farther into the hole.

Since the stick is rectangular and the hole is round I took a piece of .010inch stainless steel wire (from a friend who is an orthodontist) and bent a very small v-shaped hook on the end. I ran the wire down the side of the dipstick then rotated it so the hook grabbed the opening between the two pieces of metal that make the pressure seat and SLOWLY pulled it up then grabbed it with pliers when it cleared the top. Hurray! My wife was holding the flashlight and we both felt like we were working in the maternity ward as we talked that thing out of there!

Bob

Take a toothpick and place a drop of Gel Super glue, JB Weld, ect. on the tip. Try to place it on the dip stick, let it set up then remove the broken dip stick. Sounds good in theory just hope it works in real life. Good Luck and let us know the final out come.

Very thin long needle nose electronics type pliers should do it?
