mf 65 starter wont engage

ok my father just gave me his old tired mf 65 industrial with a loader i was using it yesterday and i went to start it today and the starter engaged made a clank and just spun so my first thought was it busted the nose cone so i took it off the nose cone is fine as are both gears so here is my question why wont it engage? to check the fly wheel i turned the engine over 180 degrees and it still wont catch i also cleaned the shaft of oil and everything moves freely im stumped and really need this to work fast thanks in advanced chris

I assume the starter moter is spinning but the drive is not turning the engine there are a couple of things that can cause that. One is one of the pins that connect the solenoir to the starter drive fork has broke and not pulling the drive in that is very rare but I have had a few that did. The other thing oil in the starter drive has the balls that sling out to make the gear turn is causing them to stick that is very common on them.
