Hello, I am hoping someone can help me out or point me in the right direction. I am looking at a Massey Harris 44 and it has a very faded Special decal on the sheet metal. I believe the tractor is a 1952 and therefore couldn"t be a 44 Special. Is there any way, by looking at the engine, etc., to determine if it"s a 44 or 44 Special? It has live power and also down pressure on the 3 point hitch. Was down pressure something that came on the 44 or 44 Special? I know very little about Massey Harris tractors and would sure appreciate any information or advice, or where I might find out more about the 44 and 44 Special models.
Thanks Bob

First Specials were built in late 1952, but as '53 production. To cut to the chase on Special, or
not Special: all Specials have gated plate on the shift lever, covers the rubber boot, and all have
the shortened upper seat support(tube or early-
flat),which ends almost even with the vertical PTO engage lever. Row Crop version(38" rears)is
probably one of the five best wheel tractors this
world has seen.

The 44 special had a Continental H-277, while the regular 44 had an H-260, engine number is stamped on the block, just under the head, towards the front of the engine. Both the 44 and 44 special never came with a 3-point hitch unless specifically ordered from the factory, and my 44 standard came with the live pto option, so I don"t think you can use that as a reference point. Try finding the serial number. It should be on a tag on the left side, just in front of the trans, or it should be stamped on top of the trans cover towards the front. Hope this helps.
