West Virginia University has recently developed a safe room for use in mines. It supplies air and rations for a full shift of miners and is built to be crush/fire resistant. It was recently displayed at the Monongah memorial service.

I currently live three miles from Monongah and the same from Farmington so mining disasters are taken pretty tough here. God bless y'all... Aaron

Hi,
Have not heard anything about this on the news or even French TV, where I have been for the last week. There are many tragedies happening especially in the mine world that it is wonderful news to hear that the miners are still alive and we hope they can be rescued safely.
Regards
Dave and Carole

Does anyone understand why air shafts are not pre-drilled into strategic areas, i.e. safe-areas of mines? I'm thinking of the recent USA Sago disaster where a dozen or so guys huddled under a tarp in a so-called safe area and slowly died as their air ran out. Seems like money well spent to sink a few drill holes in advance of the emergency, esp. if the mine isn't that deep, as was the case w/ Sago.
