I am going to start cutting some hay next year. Would like to know what you guys would recommend to run a small square baler, mower, rake etc.. I live in the south and see many MF 165's 175's and 185's in the fields. Do these tractors do a good job? If not what are the problems with these tractors? Thanks for any help.

Hi, I have a 135D and 165D that I run a JD 1217 mower and a JD 337 bailer. Both will do the job, but the 165D has a lot more power and shows no strain. My new 4 star tedder needs a 50+ hp tractor and most of the larger moco want a 50 Hp tractor, so the 165D is your best bet. Mail me if I can be of help. Bill

All good rigs... the 135, 165, 175 were the possibly the best working tractors of their era..

Check to make sure the multi-power shift works properly. You're supposed to use it in High periodically to keep things lubed properly in the tranny... and if it hasn't been used in awhile it will get stuck.

If you want to run a loader, the stock hydraulics didn't have a lot of extra whoopee for such things.

Other than that, I don't know of any real weaknesses on any of them. Like the other poster says get the Perkins diesel. Beautiful engine(s).

The gas engine models have a reputation for being thirsty when worked hard.

I have a 165 MF tractor. Very good tractor. Enough power for most jobs. Starts good in the winter even in cold climate areas. The Perkins diesel engine operates very economically. As the other posters said - stay away from the gas engine, not as reliable and very thirsty when worked.

I have a 165 and love it. This tractor has plenty of power to bale hay or just about any other work you want to do. I suggest the 165 with a perkins dis. and not the gas engine though.

I have a MF 165, plenty of power. The problem I have is with the hydraulics not strong enough for a belt round baler.
