MF 35--3rd question

Okay, no response to my previous two posts, so I will try a third. MF 35 Utility Government version (1962). Need to know about the ball nut assembly. The gentleman selling has the complete steering column disassembled and showed me where the bearings need to be feed into the steering shaft and ball nut assembly. My question is the book doesn't say what size the recirculating bearing balls are and how many. I can see from the manual that you remove one screw and feed them in, but not sure how many/size.

Any help would be appreciated!

Mike

Hi Mike;

I had to replace the ballnut assembly on my TO-35 a couple of years ago. I may still have some of the balls from the old one, but I can't say I know how many make up a complete assembly.
As Chuck mentioned, the tin tracks can get damaged. This can happen when a front wheel gets jammed against a large rock or stump and one tries to resist or overcome with the steering wheel. That's what happened to mine- the thin metal track expanded and the balls blew out. At the time, it didn't seem like there was enough force or strain at the steering wheel to cause this failure, but maybe this had happened to the previous owners as well and it reached the cycles-to-failure threshold.
I considered trying to repair mine, but even the steep cost of a replacement outweighed the trouble of getting stuck again without steering not to mention the trouble of going through the disassembly/reassembly.
I'll check later when I get to the shop and if I find some, I'll put the calipers on 'em and get back to you.

Roger

I found out that it takes 28 from the Ferguson website. I have the 35 book and it says "do not disassemble the ball nut and shaft assembly as component replacement parts are not available." This tells me I need to find a new/used steering shaft assembly.

I would appreciate the size if you find it. Thanks!

Mike

Hi Mike;

I measured three of the balls and they are all .3115"
I think I bought a replacement shaft assembly from this site- It's been a couple/few years, so I can't remember for certain.
Good luck and have fun!

Roger

Thanks for the measurement. .3125 is 5/16. That was my estimate looking at the grove in the shaft. I think I will pick up some and give it a fitting try. I found a complete replacement of the steering shaft assembly from Restoration Supply in MA for $219. I would think I could find a used one locally (Idaho).

Thanks for the information and the leg work. I will let you know how it goes!

Mike

Mike, I would like to help you since no one has come on. I have all the books but I cannot find
where these are sold seperately. I have the 35 and
35 utility books. I presume this is manual steer.
I have the original service manual but I'm not
getting any help. I do recall in my years in the
Massey business these were not broke down-sold as
an assembly. Sometimes the little tin tracks get
damaged. Auto parts stores should have any size
balls if you can determine what size. I'll try old
service bulletins tomorrow. Chuck

This is power steering, but according to the 35 book I have it's the same for manual. The manual says its sold as a unit. I would appreciate any help you can get for me.

Mike
