MF65 won't start - any ideas?

I just purchased my first tractor over the weekend, a 1963 MF65 diesel with a loader. It started easy and ran fine for two days. I backed it up to unhook a mower and when I tried to restart - nothing. It has a push button ignition and when I press it the ammeter needle jumps but that's all. It has a new battery & cables and I cleaned and checked all my connections. I'm sure there is something simple I'm missing, but having never worked on a tractor I'm at a loss. Any ideas that might get me running again?

I hope your probelm is fixed already. I would bet that you do not have your Hi-low Transmission in neutral. There is a safety switch (little 1" terminal on case under the dash) that prevents starting with tractor in gear.

Wiggle the high-low shift lever and make sure it in in the middle and out of gear, also put main gear shift in Neutral.

I've run into this a few times and always have a mild panic attack when it happends.

Jeff

Well, if the ammeter's dicharging you've got a draw. Bad switch, maybe? Short to ground someplace? If the solenoid's not clicking, the juice is going somewhere.

You might try hitting the starter below the solenoid with a 2x4 or rubber mallet (I've used a single jack hammer or a rock, depending on what was available). Then try cranking 'er over. That often works for mine.

know the area will we ride it every year in the fall. but back to your tractor you said that your amp needle jumps to - when you try to start it but do you hear a click from the solenoid on top of the starter if so then you have power to it but thats not for sure it's good or your starter might be bad or the starter could be locked to the ring gear

No click from the solenoid, nothing at all. Started great one minute, dead the next...Similar to tripping a circuit in the house....

sure you have the shift levers in nutral? if so then[[[[[ MAKE SURE]]]]] tractor is in nutral and brake set!!!take a old screw driver and jump the big post and the small post with the wires on it to make a circuit this way it will tell you if you have power you will get a spark and starter should turn over and start tractor. did you look on the back side if starter button for wires off or in line fuse
