The oil pressure on my 3 cyl perkins 35 is very high when you start, but as the engine warms up the pressure drops too low. Have changed the oil pump and water pump. Am thinking that the thermostat is maybe stuck shut causing overheating. Coolant does not boil.Odd how it goes from one end of gauge to other.

Thanks lads for your replies. Met a M/F mechanic(while drowning my sorrows)last night. He says that although the engine was rebuilt 2 years ago, that it sounds like I have got a broken piton rings. Checked out bearings when I installed the oil pump. Looked quite good. Looks like I have to dismantle engine and spend cash. Just what I didn't want to do at this moment. Do not have enough time to start at moment.

I have a 40 Industrial with the 3-cyl Perkins Diesel. Same problem, new gauge. After an hour or so of mowing, the pressure is 20 psi @ 1700 rpm. New oil pump & rod bearings. Original Main Bearings.

I have a MF203 (same engine) with the same problem. From what I've been told (and it is not good news) that this is caused by the main bearing being worn out. The solution is $$$ - Rebuild the engine or a short block. Me, I went with Rotella 20w-50, Slick 50, and I watch the gauge. after an hour or 2 (depending on load) it is time to take an hour or 2 break and let it cool down.

Please.... If anyone reads this and has a better suggestion.... let me know!

Thanks,

-Gerry

have gone to change thermostat, but found there wasn't 1 fitted. Water was a bit dirty, so have flushed and back flushed as much as I can. Oil pressure still drops too low when engine has heated up. Can not figure out how pressure can go to the extremes. Could there be a blockage inside the water jacket causing the oil to heat up too much. Will I have to dismantle engine. Any of you guys come accross this before?

Thanks for the replies guys. Will check out the gauge. Have been advised that because the engine has been serviced regular and clean to use multigrade. Just changed last night, so will see what like. If I have time today am going to remove and check out the thermostat. Should open at relatively low temp. Am thinking I need to fit a temp gauge.

might temporarily "T" in a cheap mechanical aftermarket gauge and see how the numbers compare

what oil are you running?, straight 30w works for mine

Are you sure the gauge is good? I have seen them show strange pressure readings when they go bad.
