The 35 is a transitional tractor, from the older technology to the new. It is a very desireable tractor for lots of reasons, mainly that it isn't too expensive and provides most of what you can get with a modern tractor of the same size. Having said that, $3400 is top dollar in my mind, especially if it does not have the two stage clutch for live PTO. You can tell by depressing the clutch and it should have a "notch" that you can feel with your foot. Also, the serial number will begin "SGM" if it is a two stage clutch and "SGF" if it is a single stage. Probably if it has the two stage clutch, the price is ok. If not, I'd try to get it for $3k. My two cents. One caveat on that however, is the two stage clutch is very expensive, so make sure it works well.

Thanks for all the info, The tractor I'm looking at is a gas, very nice shape. New rear tiers, new seat, carb rebuilt, everything works. 3400.00

The TO-35s are great tractors - Either gas or diesel.

They work great with a 5' bush hog. A 6' one is really too big.

The 2 stage clutch is an option on the TO-35s. I think there's a code in the serial number that will tell you. I'd say it's definitely worth having.

Around here anything that runs is more than $1,000. I've seen them go for over $3,500 for a better machine in good shape.

Find one that is Re: Massey Fergurson 35 in reply to Bill Barrett, 06-28-2006 16:09:21
Find one that is a diesel powered 3cyl Perkins NOT THE FOUR. These as gas tractors use a LOT of fuel brush cutting. The perkins diesel will use 1/3 the fuel.
I bought a good 35 deluxe 3perk Diesel for $1800 with scraper 7 mounth ago.

Well I"m no expert, but I have one and they are rated at 34 horsepower if the engine is healthy.
The deluxe versions have a dual clutch, for tranny and PTO, and 2 types of PTO, ground driven by the wheels and engine driven. There is a shift lever on the left side of the tranny to engage it.
The tranny is a 6 speed forward (3x2) and 2 reverse due to the 2 speed ranges.
The Continental Z134 engine is 134 cubic inches, is reliable, but prone to cracking the block if it overheats. So take care of the cooling system. The cracks usually happen between the cylinders and are usually not too difficult to repair. There are lots of repaired cracked blocks still earning their keep.
They run bushhogs quite well from what I hear. Never done it myself.

I've got a 135 with the Z145 block and it too cracked at 179 hrs (why I don't know I was 9 at the time)...I agree with the logic to get the diesel or at least get 135 with the perkins gas...worse comes to worse you can get a whole new engine if you need one (same goes for the Diesel if I am not mistaken...as I had considered repowering my tractor from the z145 to a Perkins...)

Forgot the price. I've seen anywhere from the $2000's for a bad one to the $5000's for good ones.
