I have a MF 85 whiches PTO has drifted since I got it and now it will not even turn the impliment its hooked to. It's hydrolic pump was also getting clogged up with metal shavings when the pto was ran for long periods of time. does anyone know what the problem is with the pto? I am planning on splitting the tractor this winter but would like to have an idea whats broken before hand.

Thanks in advance, Bill

Shavings in the rear end, or anywhere else is a bad sign. Something is getting ground up and everything else is getting damaged from the shavings. I wouldn't run it at all with this problem. What do you mean when you say the PTO has drifted? I believe that splitting the tractor will only expose the clutch. The clutch may have a problem but probably has little to do with the metal shavings. Sounds to me like a bearing in the PTO driveline failed. You may also have a damaged gear where it engages. This area is contained inside the transmission/rear end housing. You can pull the PTO shaft and may learn something from inspecting those parts. You'll have to go further to see inside the tractor though. Remember , there is about 10 gallons (or is supposed to be) of fluid in there, so drain it first. I would suggest getting I&T shop manual or equivalent. It should have assembly drawings of all major function groups. It'll also give instructions on disassembly/assembly of anything that may have a trick or specific sequence required. Good luck on solving this problem.

I had to split my 85 last fall. You can split it in 2 places, in front or behind the transmission. You need to split it behind the transmission to get to the PTO drive unit. The pump for the PTO is located on the right side of the tractor below the battery box. There is a small casting with 5 or 6 bolts that hold it in place. This pump runs your power steering and your PTO. If you split your tractor the PTO gear pump is located behind the main hydraulic pump ( this one runs the 3PT & aux. lifts ). You'll need to pull this pump to get to the PTO drive.

Email me if you have other questions.
