Ferguson 30 JD 5 Mower Anyone Using This Combo?

Firstly, I posted a similar message at the Implement Alley section, but I thought I'd post it here too - thanks!

I gave a buddy of mine a JD 5 sickle mower and he rigged it up to fit his Ferguson 30 tractor. Works pretty good because position control is not required with this mower - BUT....
He tells me that the tractor is to fast, even in first gear, for the mower.

This doesn"t sound right to me. Surely the speed of a Ferguson 30 and this mower would be OK. BTW, I don"t think that the "30 has a hi-lo range.

Any advice I can pass along?

Thanks!
Bill

Is he useing the ground speed pto or engine drive? if he's trying to use the ground speed, it'll go way too slow no matter what gear he uses. The engine speed PTO should be fine, and he should be able to mow faster than 1st, unless the sickle and guards are all worn out.

Not familiar with that combo, but recall mowing alfalfa with a Moline sickle mower attached to a Ford-8N, IN THIRD GEAR. Worked great at that speed; probably too fast for very fine grass, but low or second should work with standard pto.

I don't know how fast the tractor is moving, but that mower should easily cut at 5-7 MPH.

Also, I don't know what the tractor's PTO speed is, but Deere offered a smaller sprocket for the lower shaft in the #5 mower gearcase, to speed it up to compensate for an unusually slow PTO, or tough grass.
