Hi,

You have a leak somewhere in the system. It can be piston rings in the cylinder, it can be o-ring on the pipe ends from the pump and up to the little distribution cover under the seat.

The position control lever does not work if the draft control lever is raised too high. If you push the draft control lever all the way down, the position control should get back to normal if the lever on the distribution cover is placed in a position so the lower link arms can be raised and lowered.

Your leak can also be down in the pump, several places. I have a question for you, if the implement drops down very quickly, you must have a very weak lift force. Have you tested this ?

Hi Bill,I went ahead and drained the oil out, it was a mixture of green and chocolate brown, then pulled the whole top off the hydraulic housing. I found the 'O' rings on the standpipe were shot. The top one was 1/2 missing.I also found an 'O' ring about 1 1/4 inch in diam. laying in the bottom, no idea where it came from. It appeared to be layin half in the mouth of the pump. But the worst part so far is all the black sludge on the walls of the whole compartment. I got some diesel and a garden sprayer to start cleaning all that out before reassembling.Once I found the standpipe in that condition I looked no further thinking thats my problem.I understand I refill this with 80-90 wt. mineral gear oil? Is this the case? Thanks.

Sounds like a leak then.

As for oil in the transmission / hydraulics I use 15W-40 engine oils as the MF 35/65 was recommended with from Massey Ferguson in England. I understand this has been different from country to country and shall not argue about it. But I use the engine oil and never have the think about any of the gear oil / hydraulic oil being suitable or not.
Any cheap 15W-40 engine oil will do since the MF 35/65 has no wet brakes, and even with Multipower it works with engine oil.

The only place I can think of where the 1 1/4" o-ring is supposed to go is between the ram cylinder and the cover. I can not remember if there is such an o-ring in the pump. Maybe Big Dean knows / remembers.

Hi Shadow,

I recently changed the oil in my transmission on my '58 MF65 and used 85W90. I have been advised that I used the wrong oil and that any universal tractor fluid that meets or exceeds M1141 specs. should be used. After I drained my oil I refilled with diesel to flush out the casing and redrained (ran it for a couple of minutes moving it backand forth several feet, raised and lowered the rear hitch etc.). I then allowed it to drain overnight and then used the gear oil. I will eventually drain and refill with the tractor fluid to specs.

I have been advised by several people not to use the gear oil, but after the fact. Not to worry, the transmission housing should be very clean when it does get drained and refilled.

Hope this saves you using the wrong oil.

J.

Ok, Thanks for the update on the oil.So instead of a 85-90wt. gear oil I should look for a Trans-Hydraulic type oil? Does it come in different weights?

Massey Ferguson tractors built before Multi-Power came on the scene used 80-90 weight transmission and hydraulic oil. Those with M-P use universal transmission and hydraulic oil which is typically 20 wt. The lighter oil can be used in non-M-P tractors, but if the pump is weak, it may not develope as much pressure. Hydraulic oils are non-foaming. Straight gear oil will foam in a hydraulic system.

Whoa, now. Let me get this squared away as I have just rebuilt my pump, replaced all my bearings, and renewed all the seals.....

I am supposed to put something else in it other than what the owners manual reads?

I have realized that what I bought is not proper as it is GL-5 and may cause problems. I have not poured it in yet. I intend to install GL-1 when I get it. Is there documentation to show that something else may cool/lubricate/pump better? My machine is a 1959 Massey 65 gas w/o multi. If anyone has anything on this, please respond prior to my purchasing 10 gallons of GL-1.

There is nothing wrong with using the 80-90 weight hydraulic oil that was originally specified for your tractor. Years ago, we had a 1960 MF 65, which came with the 80-90. A few years later, my father bought a haybine with a remote cylinder, that we ran with the 65. Then he bought a 165 with M-P that had the lighter oil. The head mechanic at the local Massey dealer told us to change the 65 over to the lighter oil so we could use the same cylinder on either tractor.
