I was driving down the road this weekend and I started to smell something burning. The axle housing on the right side was about 200 degrees and there was smoke coming out of the drain hole. I could not push the brake pedal down. The brakes are about 4 months old but I have never went a long distance before (less than 500 feet at one time). What could have gone wrong? Could the springs in the brake actuating assembly gone bad? Any ideas or things to look for is much appreciated!

Hello,
Sorry Chuck, have to disagree with you there. If the brakes were set up with adequate clearance originally they should not cause any problem. If however water has found its way onto the linings that could cause them to seize and you would not be able to move. Cleaning of the faces should not cause this much of a problem. Support the back of the tractor safely and disconnect all brake rods. Adjust up until the wheels just go tight. Tie or block the pedals in the 'up' position and adjust the rods until the pins just fit. Slacken the main adjusters by at least one turn until approximately 1 1/2 inches of free pedal travel is achieved and both wheels can be turned freely. Carry out fine adjustment by locking the wheels on the move.

This is common with new brake lining. Relax the adj of the brakes til they get worn in. Then gradually set up. This would have happened 4 months ago if you had gone on a little "road trip"
