MF135 Diesel BAD oil leak

My 135 perkins diesel is leaking oil very bad. It is evedently filling up the bell housing because it is pouring out of the hole in the upper portion of the bell housing. It seems that this started after I ran it too hot. I didn't realize I had cut a radiator hose and had no water.
I've been reading in the forum and I see that the most common leak would be the oil pan gasket. I hope it is this and not the rear seal. Would the oil pan gasket cause it to leak this bad? I went through a gallon of oil in a couple of hours bush hogging!

If its the gasket, how hard is it to change? Is it something that I could do in a few hours? Any thing to look out for?

Thanks for any input.

With that kind of leakage, it could be that the plug on the end of the oil galley has let go.

It's an 11/16" cup type plug.

Do you still have normal oil pressure? If so, it is ok, and the leak is elsewhere.

Rear seals have been my problem.

Yes, The oil pressure still looks good as far as I can tell on the gage.

Thanks

Now others might correct me on this, but I've had 3 Masseys with Perkins 3-cylinders (diesels) to develope pan gasket leaks. One was way worse than the other 2. In all 3 cases, they leaked when I shut the tractor off. There wasn't much oil leaking out while it was running. I helped a buddy fix one that had a rear main seal leaking (bad) It poured oil while running. Even with the worst pan gasket leak, it didn't leak that volume of oil in that short of a time. Maybe a quart in 3 or 4 hours. (Which is WAY too much to dump into a bellhousing)

Get Big Dean's opinion. That's worth more than all the rest of us combined.

Don't forget to undo the 2 hidden bolts at the rear of the sump. You need to put a socket up the hole to find them. (Big Dean told me about them).

Leak is most likely the square cork seal at the rear of the pan. Oil pan gasket on perkins is made in 4 pieces. Cork in front and rear and a flat gasket on the sides. Roll the front end away and drop the oil pan to replace.

Could well be the cork seal but this is in front of the engine back-plate (casting) so should"nt fill the clutch housing, the same applies to the oil sump gasket. The corks can be replaced by simply dropping the oil sump, there is no need to split the tractor. The crank seals are prone to leakage especially the older rope seals, as is the gasket on the seal housing its self, and they can also crack causing a leak in to the clutch housing, There are also 2 cork gaskets up each side of the rear main bearing, to get to those it is nessesary to split the tractor at the clutch housing, remove the clutch, flywheel, rear main crankseal housing, engine back plate and oil sump. The rear main bearing cap can then be removed, the old gaskets removed, and for those of you that have used a genuine perkins gasket set recently you will have noticed that the 2 gaskets are not in the kit because the space is now simply filled with silicone sealant after a proper degreasing and replacement of the cap. Non genuine sets still have the old cork gaskets supplied.

Brent, if the engine overheated badly you could have scored your internals, e.g. liners, pistons ,rings loosing tension. Does the engine smoke heavily? how much blowby is coming out your engine breather in front of the engine when it's running? you could change gaskets< seals etc only to have them fail again when you restart the engine cause it cannot purge the volume of internal pressure produced. P.S. is your breather choked maybe? cheers from down under.

Not sure about the blowby. Is this checked by looking at the amount of smoke? If this is the case, I guess it would need an overhaul, correct? Probably looking at a pricy fix in this case. Not sure if it would be worth it. Is there any way to make sure prior to getting too far involved?

Thanks
Brent

Brent, check the compression in the engine, it will give you a fair indication of it's condition. also look in the front of the engine when it is up to operating temperature and see how much blowby is coming out of the breather tube, it runs from the top of the valve cover and down in front of the timing cover. cheers.
