I am trying to educate myself and sometime soon buy a tractor. I will use the tractor on weekends to brush hog, disk, plow, etc. There is a local guy with some old tractors for sale who usually has a few Masseys in stock. The tractors he currently has that interest me are a 240, 245 and a 253.

240 $7850 repainted. 1986 nice clean tractor.

245 $7500 repainted. also a good looking clean tractor.

253 $9500 1994 original paint. This tractor has a topper, shuttle, and rear hydraulics. The hours show 7500.

What would be your advice? How are the prices and what else should I consider comparing these and other tractors? What other differences are there between these models that I may not be considering? Thanks for the replies...

I think I will go to a steel supply shop and see what they have that might work. Thanks for all of the help... ;-)

Anything wide and heavy works best, no, you can"t use a mother-in-law. I"ve used 2, 12inch channel, 8 feet long; three heavy fence posts strapped with old telephone pole bolts with an old wheel weight for ballast; and one made from 4 sections of angle iron bolted up. Have heard of people pulling a section of large pipe also. Whatever you get, don"t get it too heavy or wide and put on a chain or cable long enough to make a decent turn with the tractor.

That makes sense. So what do I level it up with?

When you plow sod it helps to let the green stuff get buried and start decaying so when you disc you won"t pull up so much of the clumps of whatever you plowed under. Leveling or dragging fills in some of the voids from plowing and helps the disc work better. Neither are mandatory. I"ve plowed wheat stubble, disced, and planted tobacco in the same week when backed up against a wall. Made a good crop but had clumps all over it. Depending on your soil type and what you"re planting you can flex to what you have time for.

Why wait three weeks to disc? And why is having the ground level important?

If you"re discing plowed sod you may want it to set about 3 weeks before you disc. I always "drag" my plowed ground to level it out some before I disc it. Anything heavy and wide you can drag behind the tractor would help a lot. It helps reduce the "bounce" when discing and spreads out the clods. Enjoy the seat time! Don"t be in too big a hurry to find that tractor, good deals take time.

I haven't tried discing, yet. I did get the two point plow hooked it up and have been turning ground with it. Its a long slooow process. I hope to start discing in a couple of weeks. Using the boom to unload the disc and plow was a breeze. I am having a good deal of fun with this tractor. Thanks, for the information. Good advice. I will use the link you gave me. I was hoping to find a good tractor deal in my area but that might not work out.

Bill, how did the discing go? Prices depend on where you are and how many "yupp..." I mean suckers(No disrespect intended) are close by. Go to this link and do a search for your area and compare prices. That will at least give you some idea of the average price for a given model. If you liked the 135 you"ll love the 245. Don"t know a lot about the 240 or 253. 7500 hours on a "94 model? Run away now. Both 240 and 245 seem overpriced but it may be the demand locally. IF you could find a decent one or two-owner you"d be way ahead, you would know more about it"s history than buying from a tractor jockey. Have any friends with other brands? Try them out and go from there. Good Luck with the search, you can get burned much worse sometimes with used tractors than used cars. 0.02
