I have a 72 MF 135 3 cylinder gas engine. It has been running great until about a month ago. It started to skip once in a while. Now after about 15 minutes of use it mis-fires and will finally just die. I tried to pull out the choke a little to see if it needed more gas. That did nothing. Until the last month or so, I could start out in high 3 and it would take right off. Now it sputters and almost dies. It seems to run better when going down hill.( less mis-fires). It has new points/cap/rotor/plug wires/spark plugs. Nothing has been changed since a month ago when it started this problem. I replaced the ignition switch because it would not start inless I let off on the key after the starter got it turning over. Seems to run a little better. The battery is fully charged at 13 volts and the alternator was new in 05. Does anyone have any ideas? What should the compression #'s be? I'll check that next. I'm using regular unleaded gas. Do I need a lead additive? I used it on a couple tanks and didn't notice a difference. Any help is appreciated.

this is a long shot!

just after I got it, I put new points in my 135 gasser, ran like a champ for a while and then started doing what yours does, drove me crazy until I checked the point gap, points had closed up on me

I didn"t put any grease on the points rubbing block and it wore down real fast - re-adjusted the points, bit of grease on side of the rubbing block and solved my problem

I would start out by checking the ignition system to make sure that it provides a fat, bluish spark. Pull the center wire out of the distributor cap(the one that runs to the coil) and hold it near a good ground. Try a start and you should have a fat bluish spark. If you do, check the timing and at he centrifugal advance. You'll need a timing light to do this. If you don't have a fat, bluish spark find out why. It could be bad points, incorrect point gap, bad coil, bad key switch (you said you changed that), worn distributor shaft/bushing, bad wiring/connections, etc.
If the ignition side checks out, them make sure that the carburetor is adjusted per the owners manual. Black, fluffy, dry soot on the plugs is indicative of an overly rich mixture. If adjustment doesn't fix it, then check the float setting. A leaking float or a maladjusted float will cause the carb to flood and run rich.
Do the checks systematically, one thing at a time and record the results until you find the problem. Get back here with the results and we'll provide more help.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I have drained the fuel tank, it looks perfect. I cleaned the air filter, same. The exhaust pipe is black soot color. When I shut the engine off, it will back fire a little and then it seems to run backwards for a second and back fire out of the carb. Not a loud bang, but a small pop.

Have you checked the timing? Also, I'm a Perkins diesel fan. I don't know a lot about them. I know even less about the gassers. I seem to recall someone mentioning some sort of anti-dieseling solenoid (on carb.) or some such thing on the 100 series gassers. Maybe someone a bit more informed than I can let us in on that.

Checked the gas tank? Could be a fuel blockage or water in tank/filter(s). Is it backfiring any? Any unusual smoke from exhuast? How"s the exhaust pipe color? Check compression and go from there.

Is it possible your air intake hose is colasping after the motor has warmed up. Maybe not getting enough air flow.

Thanks to all for the extra ideas to look for. I plan on spending some time next week checking each of these ideas. I'll repost when I get this thing figured out.
