I have a chance at a MF 135 for $2800 that looks great w/ new tires, good 3 PT etc. Problem is the pto stays on all the time , pump off or on.
can not disengae it. Is this a fixable problem or is it just a live PTO? All I have seen is pictures. I am a little confused about this problem. Any info or help would be appreciated.
thanks bob wolf

A few questions...

What do you mean by 'stays on all the time ?'

That the clutch won't disengage ? Or that the PTO can't be 'shifted' out of the engaged position ? ...or.. Is it really just spinning due to clutch drag ?

See if you can get the PTO lever to the
'rearmost' position. This puts the PTO in 'ground mode' and you should see it turn slowly only when the tractor's moving. This would be a good test to see if it's functional inside. The Middle position is OFF.

The MF 135 has a proper 2-stage clutch with independent PTO and drive components. Depending on what you're really seeing the problem may be as simple as a stuck clutch, broken clutch spring, clutch out of adjustment or...????? ??

If it's a diesel and everything else is ok...I think that's a real good price.

Thanks for your great questions, I have a little more info. Its a 150 mile round trip to see it. the owner says he rebuilt the pto brake and hyd pump from a basket case and it ended up not working out for him , he is 80 and tired of it. He thinks its just an adjustment he is getting wrong. He said the clutch will not disengage

I will drive there tuesday and try your tests you gave me in your info.
thanks again. bob
