Just got a 1962 Massey Ferguson 35 Deluxe gas with Continental engine from neighbor. It hasn't run much in last few years but it seemed OK when it did. I cleaned the plugs and put in fresh gas and decided to drive a little but I couldn't get up to much speed. It seems like the rod to carb from the governor won't move so the carb doesn't open. I assume this governor lever must be stuck...will the bumper screw on the other side loosen this up so the rod can move? Thanks.

I would disconnect the carburetor to govrnor lever link from the governor lever. Pull the thottle lever wide open. Try to move the governor lever toward the back of the tractor turn it loose and see if the control spring will pull the arm forward. Then check the carburetor to govrnor lever link to see if the hole in the clevis it about a half hole past the the hole in the governor lever when the link is pull to the front as far as it will go. If it will do that there probably nothing inside the timing cover causing your problem. It probably is how the throttle and gover linkage is adjusted. If it is not all adjusted right the governor will not work right. If I can bo of further help Email me

Make sure all the linkages are free. You can see if the throttle is stuck by disconnecting the throtle rod from the carb and seeing if the throttle bell crank will open and close the throttle plate. If it does, then the problem is somewhere in the linkage and you'll need a manual to tell you how to adjust it or trouble shoot it. If the throttle plate is stuck, you'll have to clean the throttle shaft.

Thanks Jerry. The problem is not at the carb....its at the other end of the rod that is connected to the governor lever. This lever should move horizontally about an inch which will move the rod to open the carb but seems to be stuck. I haven't checked the manual yet but was wondering if others had this problem.
