MF 35 alternator voids tach

The (1962) Massey 35 gas I just got has an alternator installed in place of the generator. I realize these are more efficient re charging capability but now I don't have a tach. Is there any kind of a conversion unit that can be used or a tach that is adapted to an alternator? I kind of wish I had the generator back. Thanks. Also, thanks again to Big Dean as I got the governor, linkage, etc. problem resolved.

Here's some tachs. I have the R85085.

Brian, Gerald is right about J.C. Whitney. They do have one that is suitable. I installed one on my 35 a few years ago. It goes 0 to 4000 and fits the tach hole perfectly. HTH, Cosmo

Some places that sell parts (can't list their name here) that show alternators with a tach fitting on their rear. They probably aren't the right speed and direction of rotation for the MF tachometer. There is a gear box on the rear of my MF-135's generator. I've looked the problem for my MF-135 for years, but after I adjusted the new voltage regulator on my generator it does adequately, even running my electric spray pump for half a day at a time.

The MF-135 with alternator were only with Perkins engines where the tachometer is driven from the end of the cam shaft.

There were later MF like 2135 that may have had an alternator on a Continental engine. Perhaps there's an alternator for them to search for with tachometer provisions.

I see in the J.C. Whitney catalog (at least the last time I looked) there was a digital tachometer with 10 rpm steps. Its sure that the engine won't get way up in its 9999 rpm range, but that seems to be on possible solution. I've not detected a 3000 rpm full scale electronic dial tachometer in any hotrod catalog but that would be a workable solution. I question whether the electronic tach would survive a winter outside too.
