Finally got all the parts to build my AD4-203, was installing connecting rods today, went to replace the nuts with the new ones I got but they are not self locking nuts, the part number is different but according to jacks small engines this is the correct supersession. Original part number is 376 156 X1, perkins # 2211155. It superseeded to 1476245X1, they have a "s" on one side and a smoth side on the other. Can you shine some light on all this. Can I use grade 5 self locking nuts from hardware store or reuse old ones. Thanks Chris

Hi Chris The nuts you have are the right nuts the smooth side goes toward the rod cap. They will not come loose if you have them torque to specs. Here is some information we received from Massey Ferguson on a Service Bulletin about the replacement rod nuts used on the Perkins engines Some of rod bolts nuts on the old engines were self locking nuts these torque at 70 ft lb.

The Cadmium plated nuts (Silver color) torque at 45 ft. lb.

The black Phosphorus nuts torque at 60 ft. Lb.

We got service bulletins on this in the earlier 1980 saying not to mix the nuts in an engine if you had to have a nut to replace them all. When you order rod nut you could either get the Cadmium plate or the black Phosphorus nut which ever they had on hand at the time.

Thanks for the info. but still unsure. These nuts are black in color, on one side they have lines circular with a "5" and the other side is a raised smooth surface.I can understand the smooth surface toward cap but the torque worries me. I surely do not want a cap to come loose. Thanks again for the info. without people like you this info would be lost to the guys that are still running this equipment. Rod, main and head torque specs are the most critical.
