I will be in the market for a good used tractor. A friend suggested I look into a Massey Fergeson. I have only a small area to bush hog, about 20 acres and another three or four to finish mow. Could someone make a suggestion i.e. model and year, that would be a good starting point in my search. I'd like something very reliable and easy to repair. I'll have around $7,000 to play with. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

All good stuff .. MF 35/135 65/165
and stick with the Perkins diesel. Wonderful engine, solid machines.

If the hydraulic system and tractor have been maintained well and not neglected, I don't think having the Multi-power is a big problem.. but if the multi-power doesn't work easily and properly I'd find another rig with one that works or a rig that doesn't have multi-power.

I agree with Jack, Perkins diesel is the way to go.

Hi Bart -

You can't go wrong with a 3 cyl Perkins diesel 35 or 135 (without multi-power). $3500 - $4000 should get you a good running machine.

Powerful, reliable, still one of the most fuel-efficient engines made, and probably the cheapest of any to overhaul. No complex hydraulic or automatic systems to go awry, not quite dead-nuts simple to repair, but almost!

Lots of solid advice here on the YT board too.

Lots of them still around after 40 years (speaks well of both popularity and reliability), and lots of parts on the shelf.

In my book, one of the truly GREAT tractors!

Well.... you did ask!
