Hi Bll. I just went through this with my 240 about a month ago. As the other Dave said, you can axcess the shift rails through the filler plug. You will have to play around a little until they line up. But what I found on mine was the coil spring under the shifter had broke in 3 pieces and was laying on top of the shift rails. One piece had wedged itself between the shifter pawl and rail. I was able to remove the shifter and fish everything out through the filler hole. Hopefully yours is just stuck rails. Dave

It sounds like you just have to take a long screw driver and push the sliding gear back. Go through the filler for the transmission. Look at the older posts on here. It is some what common. Don't lift up on shifter when changing gears. Dave

THANKS TO BOTH DAVES:

I was able to as first Dave instructed access through filler for transmission and use long screw driver and push sliding gear back.

Don't thank me, thank Big Dean. He has it on his web page. I've never had my tractor stick in gear in over 25 years but imagine it would seem like a nightmare if you didn't know how to fix it. Glad I could help. Dave
