Replacing Generator on MF 165

The old MF 165 generator/regulator has died... based on replacement costs and better alternator performance at low rpm I would like to replace the old setup with an alternator.

Does anyone have a make/model recommendation for what makes a good 'bolt in' here ?

Thanks in advance...

Search the entire board for Tyler Woods. He has written articles on how he did it.

If you have a diesel no tach. hook up is required?

If you have a gas engine where tach is hooked to back of generator. I would look for an alternator from a newer mf180. I went without a tach for 2 years. I would pay the extra money for an alternator or generator that keeps your tach going.

Converting to an alternator is definately an improvement and VERY economical compared to repairing what you have.

I agree with the loss of the tach being a detriment. I'm still searching for an electronic tach that will fit my existing dash without making my 2135 look like a street rod. I've come close with the looks of one model but it wasn't the right size.

Tyler, thanks for the re-link to your article.

Interestingly, my tach is driven off the camshaft at the rear of the engine, not the alternator.

I think my MF was manufactured in 1965 or 1966... it has the Perkins with the 'Durachrome' bores or (some such name).. It's a wonderful engine and has been a great tractor for the last 35 years.

I just finished adding ROPS to the 165.. now I've got to go bushog the bullrushes that are taking over part of the back 40.. after that, it's the on to the alternator project.

thanks again.

I think the Perkins is a better engine. Mine has the Continental 134 gas engine but it's in great shape and serves me well. I plan to add a ROPS this winter but there's a lot of projects on the list.
